Services >> Transmission Services Transmission ServicesWhat It Does The transmission system transfers power from the engine to the rear drive wheels. Front-wheel-drive vehicles are equipped with a "transaxle" (a combination transmission/differential) that transfers power from the engine to the front wheel drive wheels. Service and Maintenance Your vehicle's transmission fluid serves as a transmission lubricant and coolant. Neglecting it can cause problems with shifting and can even lead to transmission failure. When you take your vehicle in for its regular engine oil change or when you change the oil, the transmission fluid level should be checked - as well as all other fluid levels. Refer to your owner's manual for directions on checking and changing the transmission fluid properly. Fluid can be added if needed, but it's important not to overfill the reservoir. Did You Know? Have your ever wondered why it's so difficult shifting an automatic transmission out of PARK on a steep grade? It's because in the PARK position, the transmission locks the driving wheels and the transmission resists the vehicle's tendency to roll. To prevent being jammed in PARK while on a grade, use the following procedures as suggested by the Car Care Council:
These simple procedures will not only save wear on your transmission, but on your arm as well!
