Did You Know?

If your engine begins overheating while driving in heavy traffic, the following steps can help alleviate the condition:
Set the climate control system to "Heat"
Set the blower fan on "High"
Roll down your windows.
Allow more distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you (This enabgles your engine to "breathe" more easily).

The above steps will help reduce heat on the system. If the overheating condition persists, pull over to the shoulder of the road and allow the engine to cool. As a precautionary measure, have your vehicle checked by a professional technician as soon as possible.

1 Compressor (shown with clutch)

image of a Compressor
Function:
Compresses and circulates refrigerant throughout the cooling system.
Signs of Wear:
Lack of or insufficient cooling, excessive clicking sounds or unusal noises when using the A/C system.

2 Compressor Clutch

image of a Compressor Clutch
Function:
Turns the compressor on and off
Signs of Wear:
Reduced cooling in the vehicle interior, noise when running the air conditioning system.

3 Condenser

image of a Condenser
Function:
A radiator-like unit that cools the refrigerant gas back into a liquid.
Signs of Wear:
Signs of Wear: Reduced cooling capability in the vehicle cabin or physical damage to the condenser.

4 Expansion Valve or Orifice Tube*

image of an Expansion Valve
Function:
The restriction point at which the refrigerant expands and cools.
(*Vehicles are equipped with one or the other).
Signs of Wear:
Lack of cooling within the vehicle cabin.

5 Accumulator/Drier

image of an Accumulator/Drier
Function:
Stores and removes liquid in the refrigerant until it changes into a gas refrigerant.
Signs of Wear:
Lack of or insufficient cooling in the vehicle cabin.

6 Evaporator

image of an Evaporator
Function:
Absorbs heat from the cabin air and removes its moisture. (Water is typically visible beneath the vehicle when the A/C system/evaporator has been operating).
Signs of Wear:
Insufficient cooling of the vehicle cabin.

7 Blower Motor

image of a Blower Motor
Function:
Drives air through the cabin's heating and air conditioning system.
Signs of Wear:
Lack of airflow through the cabin vents, unusual noises coming from the blower motor.

8 Heater Core

image of a Heater Core
Function:
A small radiator through which engine coolant flows in order to heat the air entering the cabin.
Signs of Wear:
Sweet-smelling vapor coming through the defroster or other cabin vents, insufficient or lack of heat in the cabin.

9 Heater Hose

image of a Heater Hose
Function:
Routes the heating and air conditioning system's liquid and gas.
Signs of Wear:
Evidence of hose leaking, cracking or hardening, brittleness or lack of heat/cooling within the cabin.
