Why Auto Service is Important
Oil Changes - Fuel Filters - Vehicle Inspections
First of all, the regularly scheduled maintenance on a vehicle (the most frequent of which is oil changes) I recommended at 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.
Oil is the life blood of the engine, when it gets dirty it isn't as effective at preventing engine wear. Oil itself doesn't necessarily wear out; it gets dirty, and it can get dirty even when your car is not being driven very often, of course it gets dirty under normal and severe driving conditions.
Spokane and Eastern Washington are considered areas with severe driving conditions. We have low temperatures in the winter time; a lot of short trips in town in sub-freezing temperatures are hard on the engine and the oil. High temperatures in the summer time are also hard on the oil and we have the added problem of high levels of dust and other particulates that find their way into the engine.
So, changing the oil every 3000 miles or 90 days is an inexpensive way to provide your car with one of the most important services that increases the life of the engine.
Fuel Filter…
Keeping It, and Your Fuel Injectors, Clean
I also like to keep an eye on the fuel filter. While most of the fuels these days are clean, it is possible to get contaminants into the fuel and into the gas tank. The newer cars with their fuel injected motors demand very clean fuel to keep the injectors from clogging. Clogged injectors can lead to poor mileage, stalling and other fuel related malfunctions that are hard on the engine, not to mention expensive repairs.
While some of the manufacturers suggest longer service intervals, my recommendation is that the fuel filter be checked at least every two years.
